A new scam involving bitcoin and threats over viewing porn has Kamloops RCMP warning people to think before reacting.

The local police have received multiple reports of a scammer emailing people claiming to have proof that the person receiving the email has been watching porn. The scammer then threatens to email that proof to the person's contacts, unless the scammer receives $7,000 via Bitcoin, according to a police press release.

Often the email includes the person's email password.

“Whether they have your current or a past password, it is still a scam”, states Cpl. Jodi Shelkie in the press release. “Ignore the email. Change your password immediately. And most importantly, do not pay any money in bitcoin or any other form of payment.”

Police are reminding people to use unique passwords and to change internet passwords on a regular basis. Also, if a scam email includes an attachment, don't open it; attachments are a common way for hackers to load malware onto a computer.
